Instructions
Official Recipe:
- Muddle the 4 fresh mint sprigs gently with the powdered sugar and water in the bottom of a chilled Old Fashioned glass (or traditional julep cup). Aim to press the leaves, not tear them.
- Fill the glass completely with cracked ice, mounding it slightly above the rim.
- Pour the 60 ml bourbon whiskey over the ice.
- Stir well until the glass or cup is thoroughly frosted on the outside and the drink is very cold.
- Top with a little more cracked ice to rebuild the dome if it has melted down.
- Garnish with a large, fresh mint sprig; lightly slap it between your hands before placing it to release the oils and aroma.
Note: Avoid over-muddling the mint. Broken, shredded leaves can release bitterness and cloud the drink.
Tips
- Use quality bourbon: Choose a mid- to high-quality bourbon around 45% ABV. Too light and the drink is flat; too strong and it can become harsh.
- Fresh mint only: Use fresh, vibrant mint with no black spots. Spearmint is traditional and offers a clean, refreshing aroma.
- Cracked ice, not cubes: Cracked or crushed ice increases dilution and surface area, which is essential for the Mint Julep’s frosty, slushy texture.
- Chill the vessel: Pre-chill the glass or julep cup in the freezer. A very cold vessel frosts faster and keeps the drink colder for longer.
- Muddle gently: Press the mint against the sides of the glass to release aromatic oils, but do not grind it into pieces to avoid bitterness.
- Build aroma with garnish: Use a tall, leafy mint sprig and place it so that your nose touches it when you drink. This enhances the mint perception without oversweetening.
- Control sweetness: Start with the classic sugar quantity, then adjust by adding a splash more water or bourbon if you prefer a drier profile.
